Tsjalle van der Burg teaches in the Honours programme of the University of Twente. Previously, he has worked for the University of Groningen and the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam. Van der Burg holds a M.A. in Social Geography and a Ph.D. in Economics.

Van der Burg is currently investigating sports economics, among other things. In his recent publications, he combines insights from sports economics and sports law. More generally, his publications on many different subjects include corporate governance, project appraisal, macroeconomics, and international environmental economics. He has also participated in various UNEP and OECD research projects.
