Collett v Smith and Middlesbrough Football and Athletics Company (1986) Ltd

Assessment of damages. Benjamin Collett, the claimant, when 18 years old was playing for Manchester United Football Club Reserves team in a match against Middlesbrough Football and Athletics Company Reserves team. In the course of the game, he was tackled by Gary Smith, first defendant. The tackle was high and "over the ball" and, as a consequence, the claimant suffered a fracture of the tibia and fibula of his right leg. The judgment awarded with nearly four million pounds for future loss earning, in the understanding that the player would have made it to the Premier League if he hadn’t suffered the injury.
