Alexander Engelhard

Counsel

Alexander Engelhard is a German-qualified attorney and counsel at ARNECKE SIBETH DABELSTEIN in Frankfurt, specialising in international dispute resolution, regulatory and contractual matters in the sport, media and entertainment industries. He acts as counsel before state courts and arbitral tribunals and regularly serves as arbitrator and certified mediator.

Alexander has been involved in more than 100 national and international arbitrations, including proceedings before the ICC Court of Arbitration, the German Institution of Arbitration (DIS), the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the Basketball Arbitral Tribunal (BAT) and Sport Resolutions. He also regularly represents clients in disciplinary and financial disputes before judicial bodies of sports governing organisations, including FIFA and UEFA.

In addition, Alexander advises on the drafting of contracts, rules and regulations and has significant expertise in commercial and marketing matters, including sponsorship, image rights and talent representation. He advises international and national sports governing bodies, professional clubs across major European leagues, as well as athletes, coaches and agents on regulatory, labour and financial issues.

Safe Sport and athlete safeguarding are a central part of Alexander’s practice. Together with Maike Herrlein, he co-authored a foundational legal opinion on the establishment of the German Centre for Safe Sport (Zentrum für Safe Sport (ZfSS)) commissioned by the German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) and Athleten Deutschland.

Alexander serves as Secretary General of the EuroLeague Players Association (ELPA), for which he has negotiated the first pan-European collective bargaining agreement in professional sport between ELPA and EuroLeague Basketball.

Alexander holds a law degree from the University of Heidelberg, a Diploma in German and International Arbitration from Goethe University Frankfurt, and a master’s degree in International Sports Management from universities in England, Italy and Switzerland. He is also a lecturer at Goethe University Frankfurt on German and International Arbitration and on Dispute Resolution in National and International Sport.
