Mathew is a dispute resolution lawyer, with significant experience in the sports sector spanning both individual and team sports, such as football, rugby, cricket, boxing, golf and swimming. He has worked with a range of clients including clubs, governing bodies, agents, individual athletes, and wider businesses operating across the sector.
Matthew advises on dispute resolution in the High Court, including claims arising out of the sale or purchase of clubs, as well as general commercial disputes. Notable cases include acting for the Cryne family in the two High Court claims arising out of their sale of Barnsley FC to an American / Chinese consortium and acting for the (then) owner of Reading FC in claims arising out of the aborted sale to a company controlled by Rob Couhig.
Matthew also supports clients with sector specific disputes, advising on arbitration proceedings involving FA Rule K Arbitration, FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber, Cricket Disciplinary Commission Proceedings, and British Board of Control Appeal Tribunal.
As an extension of his work in dispute resolution, Matthew has significant expertise in reputation and crisis management. He works with clients to advise on defamation and privacy matters, as well as engagement with the press, working closely with PR advisors.
Outside of work, Matthew is a keen amateur sportsman. He continues to play football socially having recently retired playing 11 a side football in the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur Football League and is also a member of Hazel Grove Golf Club. Matthew is also a panel member of England Boxing’s Disciplinary Committee.
