Fan data as a commercial asset: building compliant engagement strategies for sports organisations
Digital channels have transformed how sports organisations engage with their supporters, making fan data one of their most valuable commercial assets.[1] Collecting and using that data, however, brings significant regulatory obligations. This article examines the key legal considerations for UK sports organisations such as football clubs when developing digital fan engagement strategies, including:
- compliance with the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003;
- the rules on profiling and automated decision-making;
- online safety obligations when engaging younger fans; and
- the opportunities and risks of re-engaging dormant supporters.
It also explains why embedding robust data governance from the outset is essential to unlocking the long-term commercial value of fan relationships.
