Head of Legal & Governance - British Horseracing Authority
Contract Type: Full-Time
Location: London, (Hybrid Flexibility)
Department: Legal and Governance
Grade: PM4
Salary: £95-105K
7+ years PQE
The BHA is seeking an exceptional Head of Legal and Governance to lead a high-performing team comprising a Senior Data Privacy Counsel and a Junior Lawyer. Reporting to the General Counsel, this role offers a compelling hybrid opportunity for a seasoned lawyer with significant experience gained in private practice or an in-house environment.
The position carries broad responsibility across both legal and governance functions, with an approximate 50:50 split. This ensures a diverse and strategically significant portfolio of work, spanning day-to-day operational matters through to high-impact organisational and industry projects.
Success in this role requires a proactive, pragmatic, solutions-focused mindset. In a lean in-house setting, you will be as comfortable managing routine documentation as you are briefing the Board on complex structural matters.
You will operate with confidence and agility across a range of issues, applying sound judgement and commercial acumen.
Given the sport’s deep reliance on data, you will be expected to rapidly develop a sophisticated understanding of key data flows and associated rights. You will collaborate closely with the CFO and the Head of Technology Strategy on the oversight of major contracts and the governance of the BHA’s joint venture, Racing Digital.
A high level of organisation, technical excellence and integrity is essential. You will be discreet, resilient and adaptable, with the ability to inspire trust and model the highest professional standards. While an interest in horseracing is advantageous, it is not a requirement.
