In 2012, ICANN opened what many considered a once‑in‑a‑lifetime transfer window for organisations to secure their own exclusive top‑level dotBrand top-level domains. In just a few months, more than 1,900 applications were submitted and over 1,200 new domain extensions were added.[1] Major sporting organisations, including the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, and the Australian Football League, were among the early adopters.

Now, in 2026, ICANN is preparing to open a second rare window of opportunity.[2] This new 15‑week application period - running from 30 April to 12 August 2026 - offers organisations another shot at securing a dotBrand domain, much like a renewed chance to sign a generational talent after thinking the moment had passed. Sports associations and clubs only have another two months to prepare and capitalise on this opportunity - it could be at least another decade before it comes around again.

This article explores why a dotBrand domain represents far more than a digital vanity project for sports organisations. It examines the strategic advantages in cybersecurity, fan engagement, and commercial agility, considers the costs and legal requirements involved, and sets out what in-house teams need to know before the 2026 application window closes.
