ULEB Statement on Recent Discussions Regarding the Future of European Basketball

ULEB

During an online meeting held between ULEB members, the Union of European Leagues of Basketball (ULEB) discussed the recent developments following the talks between Euroleague, FIBA, and the NBA concerning the future landscape of European basketball. As the representative body of its member domestic leagues, ULEB wishes to emphasize some key principles that must be preserved in any future model.

First of all, ULEB remains a staunch advocate of the European sporting model, which is built on the principles of meritocracy, promotion and relegation, and provides a clear pathway for clubs to qualify for European club competitions based on sporting results. This fundamental principle is essential for maintaining the integrity and competitiveness of European basketball and must be guaranteed in any future structure.

Secondly, ULEB also underlines the critical importance of protecting weekends for domestic league competitions. National leagues serve as the foundation for developing basketball talent and fostering fan engagement across Europe. Ensuring that domestic leagues maintain their traditional weekend scheduling is vital for the continued growth and success of European basketball.

ULEB remains committed to working constructively with all stakeholders to find solutions that respect these core principles and uphold the strength and integrity of European basketball at all levels.
