ESIC imposes five year ban on Shammah Kakande for deliberate underperformance
The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) has imposed a five-year period of ineligibility on Shammah “ANONYMOUS” Kakande, after finding that he deliberately underperformed and improperly influenced an H2HGGL Competitive Gaming eBasketball match.
The final decision, dated 17 September 2026, upholds Charge 1 under Article 2.1.1 of the ESIC Anti-Corruption Code. The sanction takes effect from 17 September 2026 and expires at 11:59 pm UTC on 16 September 2031.
The match and proven breach
The finding concerns the match played on 16 March 2026 between PIRATE, controlling Boston, and ANONYMOUS, controlling Oklahoma City. Boston won 60–58.
Article 2.1.1 prohibits fixing, contriving or otherwise improperly influencing any aspect of a Match, including through deliberate underperformance. ESIC was comfortably satisfied that Mr Kakande breached that provision through intentional gameplay decisions that benefited Boston.
Evidence and limits of the finding
ESIC assessed the evidence cumulatively, including H2HGGL match and identity records, the contemporaneous H2HGGL internal game review, an independent gameplay review and betting intelligence. The gameplay material identified repeated decisions across the third quarter, fourth quarter and overtime that surrendered possession or declined favourable scoring and defensive opportunities.
ESIC considered that pattern alongside concentrated in-play betting on Boston which displayed indicators of coordinated activity. The finding rested on the convergence, timing and direction of the evidence, rather than any single gameplay error or wager.
The proven offence is deliberate underperformance under Article 2.1.1. That offence does not require proof that a participant personally placed a bet or received a corrupt payment.
Disciplinary process
ESIC issued a Notice of Charge on 8 August 2026 and served it on 10 August 2026. Mr Kakande denied the charge and raised jurisdictional and procedural objections. ESIC considered those submissions and, on 18 August 2026, provided its response and evidence disclosure, together with a further opportunity to answer the charge and make submissions on sanction.
No further response or supporting material was received by the final deadline or before the decision. ESIC determined the case on the available evidence. The absence of a further response was not treated as proof of the charge or as a separate aggravating factor.
Sanction and enforcement
The five-year sanction was assessed under Articles 6.1 and 6.2 and commences under Article 6.4. It reflects the seriousness and impact of deliberate underperformance while recognising that one match was charged, no personal wager or corrupt payment was proved, and no prior adverse ESIC disciplinary finding was established. No fine or costs order was imposed, and no credit for provisional suspension applies.
The sanction applies to H2HGGL tournaments and all Matches, Events, functions and activities authorised, organised, sanctioned, recognised or supported by ESIC or an ESIC Member. During the sanction, Mr Kakande must not play, coach, manage, officiate or otherwise participate or be involved in any capacity in those activities. He must not receive accreditation to provide media or other services at an official Event venue or Match.
Under Article 9.1, ESIC Members must take all necessary and reasonable steps within their powers to recognise and enforce the decision.
