
Tom Murray
Tom is an Associate at at Mishcon de Reya in the Sports Group and Esports Group and a member of the Commercial team.
He advises leading athletes, boxers, players, clubs, agents and governing bodies on a wide range of issues from sponsorship and image rights arrangements to disputes and regulatory matters. Recent highlights include: advising football clubs on compliance with financial fair play, conducting a regulatory audit on behalf of a sports governing body, and successfully defending a former Vice President of the IAAF in proceedings before the Court of Arbitration for Sport against disciplinary charges, which included the first case on infringing the autonomy of sport.
Alongside his practice, Tom leads the Mishcon Sports Law Academy – an academic programme that gives students a unique opportunity to gain a practical insight into sports law. He also produces an online vlog entitled 'Laws of the Game' providing bitesize analysis of contemporary sports law issues, tackling topics from doping and CBD to naming rights and financial fair play.
A proficient French speaker, before joining the firm Tom spent six months at the Paris office of an international law firm and also worked as a Sponsorship Consultant for World Snooker.
Tom is a member of LawinSport and the British Association of Sport and Law. He was recognised in the Legal 500 Sport Rankings 2019 as a 'strong addition to the team at the junior associate end, bringing a particular focus on e-sports'.
In addition to his sports work, Tom has a general Commercial practice with a particular interest in Tech, having completed a secondment at a multinational enterprise information technology company. He provides advice for early-stage tech companies as part of the Firm's M:Tech programme and is an active member of the MDR Lab programme through which he delivers presentations on Legal Tech to universities.
