Stephen Townley
Stephen’s specialist sector is all about rights (Intangible Assets). This includes their creation, monetisation, protection and enforcement including (IP), alongside the deployment of technology to create business efficiencies. This work has focussed on sport, media, entertainment, data, tech, including e-sport, gaming, venues, finance, and the environmental sector.
Stephen has combined careers in business and the law. In business he has served as general counsel, board member and chairman in private and public companies. In law he is a solicitor, arbitrator and mediator. He was founder and senior partner of the international law firm Townleys, which was recognised as a trailblazer in the evolution of the law as it applied to the sports rights industry.
Stephen’s unusual combination of legal and business experience has created the bedrock to develop skills needed to become a seasoned ADR professional. This has enabled him to help resolve high-value disputes in Asia, the Middle East and North America in capacities from litigator to arbitrator. He is now leading the creation of technology to aid business identify disputes in their early stages.
In conflict management and resolution, his qualifications include FCIArb, JAMS International Neutral, member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Arbitrator/Mediator for the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Technical Expert at the Singapore Dispute Resolution Centre.
Outside the office, Stephen enjoys fly fishing, natural world, gardening, food, and wine. He is now an enthusiastic investor and ambassador for the Wild by Nature brand. This is located on the borders of England and Wales in the shadow of the Black Mountains and includes a Michelin guided gastro pub serving food produced on a sustainable family farm and a wedding venue. He is also an investor in a sea farm off the Welsh coast and a rewilding project for a rainforest in Scotland.
