Trevor Watkins

Trevor is the Global Head of Sport at Pinsent Masons, having worked in the business of sport since 1997 when he led a takeover of AFC Bournemouth, becoming chairman, overseeing the development of their stadium and also being appointed a director of the English Football League.

In his almost 30 years of experience advising key stakeholders across sport, Trevor has built a team within the firm that comprises over 140 members providing guidance on all aspects of the sector. His work spans a considerable range of sports with an emphasis on investment, finance, commercial rights and major events. Clients include various ownership groups, funders, teams, leagues and governing bodies. Trevor’s primary area of focus is on strategic advice, particularly in the acquisition, disposal or financing of the clients he works with.

He has built an unparalleled global network of contacts across the sector, enabling them to call upon his detailed practical and commercial understanding of business within it, relying on his expertise gained from his position within the industry. Acknowledged by Sport Business as one of the world’s top 20 advisors to the sector, he is also listed by the leading legal directories as a member of their Hall of Fame, won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the south of England, and was awarded an honorary doctorate for his services to the development of sports law.

A litigator in his early career, he is now regarded as an exemplary strategist who provides meaningful advice across a range of disciplines, supported by specialist lawyers within the team. Trevor's other positions have included being a founding director of Supporters Direct, a director for 9 years at Sport Resolutions, the preeminent sports dispute body in the United Kingdom, being a founding director of the National Anti-Doping Panel, a trustee for 9 years at Sported (the legacy charity of London 2012), and a longstanding member of the advisory committee at Nordoff & Robbins, a leading music therapy charity. A published author, both of legal articles and his autobiography “Cherries in the Red”, Trevor is a regular presented and contributor across the media, bringing his diverse experience and detailed understanding to the heart of our work across the sports industry that stands him alone from other lawyers in the field.
