Graeme McPherson QC
Barrister, QC, Working at 4 New Square Chambers
Graeme’s sports practice involves contentious and non-contentious work across a variety of sports, although equine sports tend to dominate. He is regularly instructed on behalf of sportsmen and sportswomen, regulators, agents and other interested parties from a wide range of sports including football, athletics, motor racing, rugby union, cricket and other less high-profile sports. His instructions include commercial disputes, disciplinary/regulatory prosecutions (in domestic and international tribunals) and non-litigious matters. He is described in one of the leading legal directories as ‘... an invaluable and credible weapon in any sports case’.
Graeme also acts as an arbitrator and mediator to assist in the resolution of disputes involving individuals, governing bodies and venues. He sits on the Rules Committees of various sporting bodies. He was appointed as one of the members of the Advocates Panel established for the 2012 Olympic Legal and Representation Service.
Away from the law, Graeme has a good sporting pedigree. In his younger days he played hockey to National league level and ran marathons as quickly as he could. His sporting passion however is horse racing. He race-rode as an amateur jockey for a number of years before realising (1) that no matter how hard he tried he would never be 5’6” and 140 pounds, and (2) that he was never going to be much good. After retiring from the saddle he switched his attention to training where, fortunately, he has enjoyed greater success. In the 2008/2009 season he was granted a full professional licence to train by the British Horseracing Authority. He now combines his practice as a silk with training 40 National Hunt horses from his yard in the Cotswolds.
