Sanction: powerlifter Matthew Middleton sanction extended for breaching period of ineligibility
Sport Integrity Australia acknowledges the decision of Powerlifting Australia to sanction athlete Matthew Middleton for breaching his Period of Ineligibility.
On 29 October 2013, Mr Middleton was banned for two years for the presence and use of N.alpha-diethyl-Benzeneethanamine and 1-Phenylbutan-2-amine, stimulants that are banned in competition. This sanction was due to finish on 15 January 2015, and was extended on two occasions, as follows:
- 24 November 2014 to 23 November 2016 (first extension), and
- 12 August 2016 to 11 August 2018 (second extension).
As a result of Mr Middleton breaching the Period of Ineligibility (from 12 August 2016 to 11 August 2018), a new Period of Ineligibility equal in length to the original period has been added to the end of the Period of Ineligibility under Article 10.12.3 of the Powerlifting Australia Anti-Doping Policy 2015.
Powerlifting Australia imposed new Period of Ineligibility of two years. Mr Middleton will be eligible to return to competition on 12 August 2020.
