Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a part of our daily lives. It is a huge topic of conversation and technology magnates, politicians and even celebrities are regularly featured in the media discussing its uses, impact and regulation. AI is being applied in a variety of ways within the sports sector. For example, player data analysis (including performance and health data), game strategy, and even accelerating the speed of VAR reviews in the English Premier League. However, AI also has its pitfalls.

This article considers occasions where AI has got things wrong in a sporting context, as well as explaining what a deepfake is, how AI is being used to spread misinformation and damage the reputation of sports personalities, and what can be done to challenge a deepfake:
