An introduction to sports horse agreements - the buying and selling of equine athletes

For those in the equine industry who get up close and personal with horses by way of owning, breeding or trading, legal pitfalls can often be forgotten until something goes wrong, and the consequences become all too real and expensive. Understanding the industry’s complex commercial and legal landscape is therefore essential to maximising success. This article introduces some of the most common transactions seen in the evolving sport horse industry (with a focus on breeding and sales) and then highlights three important legal clauses that should be included in any agreement (be it in the UK or abroad).
