U.S. Weightlifting Athlete Joe Sacklow Accepts Sanction for Anti-Doping Rule Violation

USADA announced today that Joe Sacklow, of Plainview, N.Y., an athlete in the sport of weightlifting, has accepted a four-year sanction for an anti-doping rule violation after testing positive for multiple prohibited substances.
Sacklow, 25, tested positive for heptaminol, 1,4‐dimethylpentylamine (1,4‐DMPA), octodrine, ostarine, and di‐hydroxy‐LGD‐4033, a metabolite of LGD‐4033, as the result of an in-competition urine sample he provided at the American Open Series 1 on March 2, 2019. Heptaminol, 1,4‐DMPA, and octodrine are Specified Substances in the class of Stimulants and prohibited in-competition, while ostarine and LGD‐4033 are non-Specified Substances in the class of Anabolic Agents and prohibited at all times under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing, the United States Olympic Committee National Anti-Doping Policies, and the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Anti-Doping Policy, all of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code (Code) and the WADA Prohibited List.
Following an investigation into the circumstances of Sacklow’s case, USADA concluded that the stimulants he tested positive for resulted from his use of a contaminated dietary supplement. The product has since been added to the High Risk List maintained on USADA’s online dietary supplement safety education and awareness resource – Supplement 411 (www.Supplement411.org). Athletes and other sport stakeholders are reminded that dietary supplements sold in the U.S. do not receive any pre-market safety or efficacy reviews by government authorities, and thus, an increased level of due diligence is necessary to challenge the reasons for use and understand the risks of a positive anti-doping test and/or an adverse health event.
Sacklow was not able to identify the source of the ostarine or LGD‐4033 in his positive sample.
Sacklow’s four-year period of ineligibility began on March 2, 2019, the date his positive sample was collected. In addition, Sacklow has been disqualified from competitive results obtained on and subsequent to March 2, 2019, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.
