Stuart is an experienced Commercial Lawyer and Advocate, who was called to the Bar in 2002, having qualified as a Solicitor with Clifford Chance in 1999.
(i.)Football
Stuart has advised a number of Premiership football clubs and an Italian Serie A club in relation to funding (and refinancing) structures for stadia. Such advice included consideration of the relevant FA and Premiership rules and regulations as well as contractual and company law issues and in particular the rules as to insolvency of football clubs.
More generally, Stuart has acted for football clubs in commercial and regulatory matters, including advising West Ham United in a dispute relating to ticketing and promotional activities, advising Charlton Athletic F.C. in relation to issues arising from the insolvency of a sponsor, and advising a Football League club in a dispute with a former chairman and alleged breaches of the FA rules on club ownership.
(ii.)Rugby
Stuart has recently advised in relation to the sale of broadcasting rights for European Rugby competitions and the rights of the parties to the 2007 agreement with ERC as to the organisation and operation of the Heineken and Amlin Cups.
Stuart has also advised rugby clubs in relation to a range of commercial matters including advising Leicester Tigers in relation to a dispute arising out of trading rights at their stadium.
(iii.)Motor Racing
Stuart has advised on the FIA rules and other contractual and insolvency issues in the US$1.4 billion bond issue (Formula 1 Finance BV) and advised investors on the structure of proposed investments relating to promotion rights and television rights in other areas of Formula 1.
(iv.)Other
Stuart advises and drafts documents in non-contentious matters including advising sports clubs on corporate structure, corporate governance and matters relating to CASC and charitable status.
