Angela Reakes charged with breaching Anti-Corruption Code

Cricket Australia (CA) has charged current ACT and Sydney Sixers player Angela Reakes with breaching its Anti-Corruption Code and has imposed a two-year suspended sentence on the 24-year-old.
Reakes, who left the New South Wales Breakers to join the ACT Meteors in the Women’s National Cricket League this season, has received the penalty for breaching Article 2.2.1 of the Code (Placing, accepting, laying or entering into any bet in relation to the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of any match or event.)
She pleaded guilty to placing five bets on the ‘man-of-the-match’ betting market during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. The bets which totalled $9 were placed on the tournament final between Australia and New Zealand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 29 March.
Reakes has also received an official reprimand and is required to participate in CA’s anti-corruption compliance education to other cricketers in coming seasons.
Head of the CA Integrity Unit Iain Roy said: “All elite cricketers are reminded regularly that betting on any form of cricket is strictly prohibited."
“It is outlined in the Anti-Corruption training that we deliver on an annual basis and is written into our Code of Behaviour."
“Angela understands that in placing these bets she made a bad mistake and has acknowledged the seriousness of her error."
“She has been cooperative during the investigation and we believe the penalty in these circumstances is appropriate.”
Reakes voluntarily accepted the sanctions. She is able to continue participating in Australian cricket subject to no further breaches of the Code.
