FIG Disciplinary Commission sanctions Rhythmic Gymnastics judges

The Disciplinary Commission of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has pronounced sanctions against five Rhythmic Gymnastics judges who officiated at the 2014 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Izmir (TUR).
Three judges received a warning for partisan judging, while two others have been suspended from all participation in FIG activities and other international competitions. One judge has been suspended for a period of three months, the other for six months, both for having favored a gymnast representing their respective countries.
The FIG conducts a thorough analysis of the scoring at all of its events in order to assure that results are in perfect harmony with the existing code of points. The judges evaluation system is based on a sophisticated statistical model that incorporates video analysis of routines and takes into consideration deviations from the scores given by an expert judging panel.
After a profound analysis of scores given at different competitions in 2014, including the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing (CHN), this spring the FIG recognised the excellent work of 26 judges (please click here for more information.)
However, a few cases were also referred to the Disciplinary Commission, which heard them in Lausanne (SUI) on August 27.
In reporting its decisions, the commission stated that "it is crucial for the sport of Gymnastics that judges are at all times acting and seen to be acting in an independent, unbiased and competent manner. This is reflected in the Judges Oath (as set out in Reg. 7.12.1 TR) which states: 'In the name of all the Judges and officials, I promise that we shall officiate in these World Championships with complete impartiality, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them in the spirit of sportsmanship.' Any judge who fails to act in this manner damages the image of Gymnastics both in the eyes of the public and, also importantly, in the eyes of the gymnasts, coaches and other judges upon whose continuing participation the sport of Gymnastics and therefore the future of the FIG itself is dependent."
Once notified, the sanctioned judges have the right to appeal the decision rendered by the FIG Disciplinary Commission to the FIG Appeal Tribunal within 21 days.
Understanding that the sport revolves around human judgment, the FIG has established clear rules and expectations of its judges, supported by regular courses and exams and regulated by technological means in order to assure that judges meet the level of excellence required of them.

About the FIG
The International Gymnastics Federation is the governing body for gymnastics worldwide. It is the oldest established international sports federation and has participated in the Olympic Games since their revival in 1896. The FIG governs seven disciplines: Gymnastics for All, Men's Artistic, Women's Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline, Aerobic and Acrobatic. La commission disciplinaire de la Fédération internationale de gymnastique (FIG) a prononcé des sanctions à l'encontre de cinq juges de gymnastique rythmique ayant participé aux Championnats du monde 2014 à Izmir (Turquie).
Trois juges ont reçu un avertissement pour jugement partial et deux juges ont été exclues de toute participation aux activités de la FIG et autres manifestations internationales, l'une pour une période de trois mois, l'autre pour une période de six mois, pour avoir favorisé une gymnaste représentant leur pays respectif.
Lors de toutes les compétitions de gymnastique, la FIG procède à une analyse approfondie des notes rendues par les juges assermentés pour ces compétitions afin de s'assurer que les résultats des athlètes soient en parfaite adéquation avec les codes de pointage en vigueur. Ce système d'évaluation des juges repose notamment sur un modèle
statistique très sophistiqué, l'analyse vidéo des exercices et les écarts éventuels avec les notes attribuées par un jury d'experts.
Suite à l'analyse approfondie des jugements rendus aux différents Championnats du monde de gymnastique 2014 - toutes disciplines confondues - et aux Jeux olympiques de la jeunesse 2014 à Nanjing (Chine), la FIG avait ainsi reconnu au printemps l'excellent travail de 26 juges (cliquer ici pour plus d'informations).
Cependant, la Fédération internationale a dû saisir la commission disciplinaire pour quelques cas. Les audiences ont eu lieu à Lausanne le 27 août.
Dans ses décisions, la commission disciplinaire souligne qu'il est « "essentiel pour la gymnastique que les juges agissent et donnent le sentiment d'agir à tout moment de façon indépendante, impartiale et compétente. Ceci se retrouve dans le serment des juges (Art. 7.12.1 du Règlement Technique), qui stipule :"Au nom de tous les juges et officiels, je promets que nous remplirons nos fonctions pendant les Championnats du monde en toute impartialité, en respectant et suivant les règles qui les régissent et dans un esprit de sportivité." Tout juge qui ne se comporte pas de cette manière entache l'image de la gymnastique non seulement aux yeux du public, mais également, et de façon tout aussi dommageable, aux yeux des gymnastes, des entraîneurs et des autres juges, alors que c'est sur leur participation continue et régulière que repose la gymnastique, et par conséquent l'avenir même de la FIG. »
Les juges disposent de 21 jours pour faire appel auprès du tribunal d'appel de la FIG de la décision rendue par la commission disciplinaire à partir de sa notification.
Consciente que ce sport repose sur un jugement humain, la Fédération internationale de gymnastique a établi des règles claires, mis en place des formations et examens et s'est dotée de moyens technologiques pour s'assurer que les juges répondent au niveau d'excellence exigée.
