Third Round of the 2015-2016 UCI Track Cycling World Cup awarded to Hong Kong

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is delighted to announce that Hong Kong will, for the first time, host a round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup on 16 and 17 January 2016.
Racing will take place at the Hong Kong Velodrome. The 250-metre track was inaugurated in December 2013 and has since hosted several international events such as the 2014 Hong Kong International Track Cup (a UCI class 1 event).
The venue is home to local hero Sarah Lee Wai-sze. The 27-year-old sprinter clinched a bronze medal in the Keirin at the London Olympics, handing Hong Kong its first ever Olympic medal in cycling. In 2013, Lee won the 500m Time Trial title at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Minsk, Belarus.
Hong Kong continues Asia’s longstanding commitment to host UCI World Cup rounds with Kunming and Beijing, both in China, Tokyo, Japan, and Astana, Kazakhstan having also welcomed our major international series.
The 2015-2016 UCI Track Cycling World Cup will comprise the following rounds:
Cali, Colombia, 30 October-1 November 2015
- Cambridge, New Zealand, 5-6 December 2015
- Hong Kong, 16-17 January 2016
The UCI Junior Track World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan (19-23 August 2015) and the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in London, Great Britain (2-6 March 2016) complete the UCI International Track calendar.
Commenting on the announcement UCI President Brian Cookson stated: “We are delighted to have reached an agreement with the Cycling Association Hong Kong for the hosting of the final leg of our series. Riders and teams can now embark on the 2015-2016 Track Cycling season which will visit four continents with action ultimately heating up in London at the UCI World Championships.”
Cycling Association of Hong Kong Chairman Hung-Tak Leung said: “Hosting the World Cup in Hong Kong will help promote track cycling in our community, so we can identify more talented riders systematically for high level performance training.”

L’Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) a le plaisir d’annoncer que Hong Kong organisera pour la première fois une manche de la Coupe du Monde Piste UCI, les 16 et 17 Janvier 2016.
Les épreuves se dérouleront au Hong Kong Velodrome, dont la piste de 250 mètres a été inaugurée en décembre 2013 et a depuis accueilli plusieurs compétitions internationales comme la Hong Kong International Track Cup 2014 (épreuve UCI de catégorie 1).
Ce vélodrome est le lieu d’entraînement de la star locale Sarah Lee Wai-sze. La sprinteuse de 27 ans a décroché la médaille de bronze du keirin aux Jeux Olympiques de Londres, offrant à Hong Kong sa première médaille olympique en cyclisme. En 2013, Lee avait remporté le titre du 500 mètres aux Championnats du Monde Piste UCI à Minsk, en Biélorussie.
Hong Kong poursuit la longue tradition d’accueil de l’Asie pour les manches de Coupe du Monde Piste
UCI, Kunming et Pékin (Chine), Tokyo (Japon) et Astana (Kazakhstan) ayant déjà organisé des épreuves de notre principal circuit international.
La Coupe du Monde Piste UCI 2015-2016 comprendra les manches suivantes :
- Cali (Colombie), 30 octobre-1er novembre 2015
- Cambridge (Nouvelle-Zélande), 5-6 décembre 2015
- Hong Kong, 16-17 janvier 2016.
Au Calendrier International Piste UCI 2015-2016 figurent également les Championnats du Monde Piste Junior UCI d’Astana, au Kazakhstan (19-23 août 2015), et les Championnats du Monde Piste UCI de Londres, en Grande-Bretagne (2-6 mars 2016).
Commentant l’annonce, le Président de l’UCI Brian Cookson a dit : « Nous sommes ravis d’avoir trouvé un accord avec la Fédération Cycliste de Hong Kong pour l’organisation de la dernière manche de notre circuit. Les coureurs et les équipes peuvent maintenant pleinement se préparer à la saison de cyclisme sur piste 2015-2016 qui visitera quatre continents et culminera à Londres avec les Championnats du Monde UCI de la discipline. »
Le Président de la Fédération Cycliste de Hong Kong Hung-Tak Leung pour sa part a déclaré : « Accueillir la Coupe du Monde à Hong Kong aidera à promouvoir le cyclisme sur piste auprès de la population, ce qui nous permettra de détecter plus de coureurs talentueux destinés à intégrer le haut niveau. »
