Press Release

8th March 2018

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced today that Matthew McConnell, a U SPORTS football athlete affiliated with Saint Mary’s University, received a two-year sanction for an anti-doping rule violation. The athlete’s urine sample, collected during in-competition doping control on November 4, 2017, revealed the presence of D- and L-amphetamine, a prohibited stimulant.

While Mr. McConnell admitted the violation in a timely fashion (in accordance with Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP) Rule 10.11.2), he failed to participate in the results management process to determine the appropriate sanction. Because the athlete did not engage further in the results process following his admission, he was deemed to have waived his right to a hearing and to have accepted a two-year period of ineligibility which concludes on November 13, 2019. The athlete, who resides in Halifax, NS, is ineligible to participate in any capacity with any sport signatory to the CADP, including training with teammates.

In compliance with rule 7.10 of the CADP, a copy of the CCES’ file outcome summary can be found at www.cces.ca/sanctionreg.
