UK Anti-Doping to Deliver Education Programme at the Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games
UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has today announced that, for the ninth consecutive year, it will deliver its 100% me anti-doping education programme to the 1,600 school-age athletes competing at the Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games.
From 3 to 6 September 1,600 athletes will compete in 12 sports in venues across Manchester at the Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games, supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.
100% me was created in 2005 and is recognised as one of the world’s leading anti-doping education programmes, having supported over 25,000 athletes across 50 sports over the last 10 years to understand their rights and responsibilities in relation to anti-doping and competing clean.
The School Games have a proven track-record of providing a springboard for athletes to go on and compete at the highest level, and have given UKAD the chance to provide over 15,000 school-aged athletes with essential guidance and information about clean sport, which they can then apply as their sporting careers develop.
This year UKAD National Trainers will deliver education sessions based on, and promoting, the 100% me values of hard work, determination, passion, respect and integrity. Young athletes and support personnel will have the opportunity to participate in mock doping control sessions and learn about important areas such as checking medications, the risks associated with supplement use and how they can manage these and other risks they may incur as clean athletes.
In addition to education workshops, the values of 100% me will be promoted via outreach stands, a number of roaming road shows and the 100% me Chill-Out Zone located in both Athletes’ Villages.
UKAD will again sponsor this year’s Spirit of the Games award, which recognises athletes who demonstrate the core values of 100% me throughout the Games. Winners of the award will receive a £50 Nike voucher, a 100% me hoodie and goodie bag.
Nicole Sapstead, UKAD’s Chief Executive said:
“We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust to once again deliver high quality anti-doping education to 1,600 of the UK’s most talented school children at the Sainsbury’s School Games."
“Every athlete has the right to compete in clean sport and for nearly 10 years, the School Games have been an integral part of our education strategy to deter doping."
“It is imperative that the next generation of British sports stars, their support staff and parents are equipped with the knowledge and understanding to make the right choices during their career, so they are in the best possible position to compete, and win, clean.”
Ali Oliver, Youth Sport Trust Chief Executive added:
“The Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games is unique and world leading in its provision of athlete education. The event provides an environment through which we offer the UK’s most talented emerging athletes with an insight into all aspects of international multi-sport competition. This ranges from staying in the Athletes’ Village and attending the opening and closing ceremonies, to mentoring from accomplished senior athletes and understanding anti-doping and the values of clean sport."
“The 100% me education programme is one aspect of the Athlete Experience programme which is embedded in every aspect of the Games. The value of equipping these young people, who are our potential future Olympians and Paralympians, with the tools to compete clean at the earliest possible stage is an invaluable part of their grounding for senior representation.”
