WADA publishes 2019 Annual Report themed ‘Towards a World of Clean Sport’
Today, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) published its 2019 Annual Report outlining the Agency’s various activities last year and how the global anti-doping system has been strengthened as a result. Under the title ‘Towards a World of Clean Sport’, this special 20th anniversary edition also highlights some of the organization’s achievements and some of the challenges it has faced since it was founded in 1999.
An important element of WADA’s commitment to accountability and transparency, the Annual Report publicly demonstrates how WADA is performing against its stated vision and key strategic priorities and how progress continues to be made.
WADA President Witold Bańka said: “2019 was a big year for the world of clean sport. As WADA celebrated its 20th anniversary, we were able to reflect on two decades of anti-doping progress while also recognizing how much work is still left to be done. A highlight of the year was the World Conference on Doping in Sport, which culminated in the approval of the 2021 World Anti-Doping Code and related International Standards.
“It was also where we passed the Katowice Declaration, which called upon ‘all stakeholders in the fight against doping in sport, including the Sports Movement, Governments, Anti-Doping Organizations and athletes to reinforce their efforts to strengthen their cooperation in every possible way; to present a unified front to strive to eradicate doping in sport; to increase resources dedicated to protecting clean sport; and to bring all perpetrators to account, without limitation.’ The challenges posed by those who would cheat the system are complex and ever-changing but together with our partners, we are determined to continue to meet those challenges head on as we continue to lead the protection of clean sport in the service of athletes around the world.”
